Amnesia: The Dark Descent available on Steam for free until tonight

Frictional Games is offering its cult first-person horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent for free on Steam, but you've only got a few hours left to snap it up.

The deal runs until 10AM PT/18:00GMT. If you manage to nap up the game during that time you'll find it added to your Steam library permanently.

Frictional Games, creators of the cult horror hit Amnesia: The Dark Descent, are hoping to once again scare the pants off gamers with their upcoming title SOMA. This time, however, they're hoping to try out a different kind of fear.

"SOMA will be scary in a different way from Amnesia: TDD and I really hope that people will feel it is a fresh experience," creative director Thomas Grip told Gaming Bolt. "There have been so many games now that are just about running way from monsters, and I think a lot of player are getting desensitized to that."

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs 'looked like Sesame Street' compared to hate mail

Creative director Dan Pinchbeck from indie studio The Chinese Room says they received the "worst kind of hate mail" for Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, and it even gave the game a run for its money in horror.

He thought they'd get some calls over content of the game, but not like this and not for the reasons they did. It baffled them people "wouldn't even kind of engage" with it.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent has sold almost 1.4M units

Frictional Games has announced in its official blog that Amnesia: The Dark Descent has sold almost 1.4M units since its launch in September 2010. Direct sales totaled 710K, while the rest were bundled in various Steam sale bundles such as the Humble Indie Bundle and Potato Sack Reunion.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs moves into 2013

Developer thechineseroom reveals that Amnesia sequel A Machine for Pigs won't be releasing this year but will land later in 2013. It was originally scheduled for Halloween in October.

Quality is the "absolute first, last, and always" with the team's work on Amnesia, and they wanted a few more months to work on it. Sorry there'll be no scares from the team this year.
