SEGA and Relic Entertainment will release Dawn of War III in 2017

After almost 7 years of waiting, SEGA and Relic Entertainment have finally revealed that Dawn of War III will return to base-building when it releases exclusively for the PC in 2017.

Players will be able to lead elite hero units and massive armies to victory, or oblivion. This is Relic bringing the series into the "modern era", building on 12 years of "explosive gameplay" by combining the base-building featured in the first game with the customization and heroes of Dawn of War II.

Sega registers Dawn of War 3 domain

Sega has registered a domain for Dawn of War 3, suggesting that developer Relic Entertainment may be working on another installment in the Warhammer 40K RTS series.

It's not definitive evidence, of course; companies often register domain names as a precaution, and this may just be Sega covering its bases, but it's been a couple of years since Relic released Company of Heroes 2, so the timing would make a certain kind of sense.

Developer Relic is working on Company of Heroes 2, which means there's little time for a full production of the next Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War instalment, but that's okay.

Robot Entertainment is made up of former Ensemble veterans with Age of Empires to their name. Patrick Hudson of the studio still believes real-time strategy can be big business.

He admits though it's "changing a lot," and he's not sure where "it's going to go." The days of selling millions of copies at "50 or 60 bucks as a PC game" are gone; PC retail not there.

New details have emerged about Relic's highly anticpated real-time strategy game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III, which was announced a month ago with very little information attached, save the fact it would combine the best features of the original and Dawn of War II.
