Puiblisher Atlus’ Catherine was not a success when it was first released in July, only selling 200K in its opening week, despite positive reviews. Two months later, the game has more than doubled its sales totals at 500K, and it hasn’t launched in Europe yet.
The game is both a dating sim and a puzzle game, as the gamer plays 30 year old Vincent, who’s having serious commitment issues with his steady girlfriend Katherine, who’s been hinting around at marriage. One night, Victor has a one night stand with a bubbly blonde named Catherine, and his priorities are thrown out of whack. This, as single men have been dying in their sleep, while Victor suffers nightmares about climbing up a collapsing tower as a monster tails close behind.
It seems that Catherine has been enjoying good word-of-mouth, and has had steady sales since its release.
It’ll be interesting to see what sort of launch Catherine receives when it comes out in European territories in Q1 2012, published by Deep Silver.
