The upcoming issue of Game Informer details Assassin's Creed 3, and details the protagonists name, some of the game mechanics, and the time period.
To say the game involves the American Revolution is a little misleading, as the game begins in 1753, which is the time of the French and Indian War, where the British warred against the French colonials and their Native American allies.
This is, incidentally, the time that The Last of the Mohicans takes place, and the hero of the tale is Ratohnhake'ton, who goes by the name "Connor" in the game. He is half-British, half-Mohawk, and was raised on the frontier by a Mohican village, which was attacked and burned by white colonists.
Connor will be visiting Boston and New York, but his climbing abilities will include cliffs and trees in addition to the few tall buildings in the American colonies. The game will focus more on massive battles. Whereas previous games could handle 100 enemies on the screen, Assassin's Creed 3 will feature battles of thousands of combatants.
In terms of weaponry, Connor will have his hidden blade, as all Assassins own, but he'll also have a knife and a Tomahawk that he can dual wield. He'll have the ability to perform double-counters and multiple takedowns, and chain kills much like previous Assassin's Creed games. Connor will also be able to use human shields, and as with previous games, he'll be able to increase his armament as the game goes along.
The game also stresses motion and speed. Pressing a button will make Connor sprint, fleeing from enemies, but also killing them as he runs past. In town, he'll be sliding under and vaulting over objects like wagons and fences. In the wilderness, Connor will use the terrain to set up surprise attacks.
The game also shares more in common with Red Dead Redemption in some ways. The wilderness alone is 1.5 times larger than the entire map of Brotherhood. Connor can kill beasts for resources, and his efficiency will dictate how valuable it is. For instance, killing a bear with a single arrow will yield a much better pelt than if Connor had stabbed it a bunch of times.
Real-life personalities will interact with Connor, and the story will revolve around his relationship with George Washington. Benjamin Franklin will also appear, as well as the infamous Gen. Charles Lee, who famously disobeyed and betrayed Washington in the Battle of Monmouth. However, since the story is less about the British and Americans and more about the Assassins and Templars, there will be some sympathetic British and some treacherous Americans.
Assassin's Creed 3 has been in development for years, and Ubisoft claims the game will feel more like Assassin's Creed 3.5 than a third chapter in the series. We shall see when the game is released 30th October on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Check back on Monday at 5pm GMT to find out more about Assassin's Creed 3.
