A rumor has been circulating at the Game Developers Conference that Mafia II developer 2K Czech is working on the cinematic cutscenes of Grand Theft Auto V, and is prepping to develop Mafia III.
According to VG247, an inside source revealed that while 2K Czech is helping out with Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar will ”open its secrets” to the developer, and help turn the Mafia series into a major franchise. The source also claims that Mafia III has been in pre-production for the past year, as 2K Czech rebuilt the game concepts and tech.
One of the more intriguing aspects of the rumor is that 2K Czech representatives were at the “Durango” developer’s summit in London. “Durango” is the suspected working title for Microsoft’s next generation console. Could this mean Mafia III is being developed for the unannounced Xbox 720?
2K Games said when asked about the rumor that it does not comment on rumors.
