A quarter of a million units shifted in just 48 hours, with only Mojang's Minecraft having sold faster. The studio can't find the words to "describe the feeling," as this is their first official studio release.
In State of Decay players must lead a group of survivors as they battle hordes of zombies, or Zeds as they're called in-game, and by maintaining a fortified home base.
Microsoft Studios published the XBLA title which is also due for PC buthas been provided by Undead Labs, which apparently are having to deal with third-party tools and the red taped associated with them - so it'll be a while. Ultimately they plan for State of Decay to evolve into an MMO, but wanted to nail the single-player first.
"State of Decay has smashed all kinds of records. The only game that ever sold more on XBLA this fast was Minecraft - an already hugely popular game," Sanya Weathers, director of community. "There just aren't the words to describe the feeling." There was no advertisement budget for the debuting IP, so it has all been word of mouth.
State of Decay fans are eager for a PC release to materialize hopefully within the next month or so. Undead Labs has the first title update for the game in the certification process, which addresses some bugs.
