From what's in the video they've certainly leapt forward from Dead Island, which was a lot more focused on the RPG elements with combat relying on stats.
Upgrading weapons is a feature that has carried over at least, as an electrified hunting knife is brandished menacingly. There are also special enemy types like hulking monstrosities who like hurling heavy objects and charging. During the night the gameplay shifts as 'the hunter becomes the hunted' and the infected 'become something more sinister'.
Dying Light releases on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One and PS4 in 2014.
