Jansson is attached as producer for Mirror’s Edge 2, and finally convinced the suits it was time to announce. Soderlund was ”frankly blown away” by the new ideas.
Ultimately it was waiting for the ”right concept and the right idea” that kept fans of the first-person freerunner in an emotional limbo, with EA teasing they’d like it to return.
”It’s taken this long because we wanted to get to the right concept and the right idea. And Sara Jansson who is producer on it, when she pitched her idea to me and Karl-Magnus, the GM for DICE, I was frankly blown away,” Patrick Soderlund told GameReactor.
”I’m like “Finally, you’ve got it!” and when you hear something like that… She pitched an idea that frankly could only be built on gen 4, is a stunning concept, and when she came to us we knew we had it. And yes, we’ve been testing ideas and we’ve been prototyping stuff, and I’m glad that we waited to get the right idea.”
The EA Games VP explained why EA was so focused on next-gen at E3 this year, saying it was what gamers were most excited about. This next-gen is also referred to as ‘generation 4’ - making us sound cool as an industry. W00t!
”For us it’s about a glimpse into the future, that’s what gamers will be excited about and I think the games that we’re building take so much out of gen 4 and what the gen 4 consoles come with that we were eager to show it.”
Mirror’s Edge 2 releases on PC, Xbox One and PS4 at an undisclosed date. It is believed to be a prequel to the original as it explores Faith’s origins, and is confirmed to be an open-world action adventure.
