It was the ”seasonality from the holidays” and the ”excitement from BlizzCon” that topped subscription numbers back up. Diablo III now at 15m sales.
As each quarter passes the number of active World of Warcraft subscriptions continues eroding, except when something big and juicy happens like BlizzCon.
”Global subscribership in the quarter ended at 7.8 million subscribers worldwide, and slightly above where we ended Q3,” said Blizzard president Michael Morhaime during the financial call. The studio won’t get much rest if they want to try and maintain those figures because outside events helped spur them.
”As we head into Q1, we are not going to benefit as much from the same factors that drove Q4,” he admitted. What will help is the release of the latest expansion pack, Warlords of Draenor, which will bring a lot of people back. It was also revealed that action RPG Diablo III has sold over 15 million copies, thanks to going multi-platform.
World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor raises the level cap from 90 to 100 and introduces a pre-built but upgradeable garrison put in control of the player, along with NPC agents. Diablo III will be receiving its first full expansion, Reaper of Souls, which raises the level cap to 70 and introduces a new class.
