You may remember Kingdom, the side-scrolling browser game which had you stomping through your gloomy realm as a solitary monarch, flinging coins at peasants in order to get them building defenses and taking up arms against the vicious bands of trolls that emerged each night.
Even with the limitations of a browser-based game, it was a unique and enjoyable adventure, so I’m excited to see what developer Thomas van den Berg can do with the concept now that he’s tamed up with indie publisher Raw Fury. Here’s the first trailer.
This is a redesigned and expanded version of the original game, which was developed in flash. Van den Berg (also known as Noio) has teamed up with fellow developer Marco Bancale (also known as Licorice) to port the game over to the Unity engine, allowing them to expand on the base-building and strategic elements from the browser version. The charming pixel art style remains present and correct - it’s a really lovely looking thing.
There’s no release date planned as yet, but apparently ”development is going very well”. Which is nice to hear. Raw Fury is bringing the title to Gamescom this week, so expect more details to emerge pretty soon.
