Fatality. Warner Bros has pulled the latest Mortal Kombat X patch, which fixed a lot of issues with the bloody brawler, but also deleted a lot of player data in the process.
That data included unlocked characters, costumes and so on from the in-game Krypt store, as well as general storyline progress. Not good, in other words.
“We’ve been monitoring the forums and are aware of the issues players are encountering,” Warner Bros wrote on Steam yesterday, in an update to the original patch announcement that didn’t specifically mention that lost data. “We appreciate the constructive feedback from you, the community. We want you to know that there is ongoing support behind the scenes and it’s important to us that Mortal Kombat X is a fun experience for all of our players.”
After fans provided plenty of (mostly) constructive feedback regarding the patch, WB Games pulled it. Players who had downloaded the patch had to revert back to the old version via another 15GB update file.
“We are temporarily removing the patch until we can pinpoint the cause of save data loss,” WB explained. “We are actively working on this and will keep everyone posted as we work towards a fix. We sincerely apologize for this disruption.”
I had my worries when Netherrealm revealed last year that it wasn’t developing the PC port of MKX (it was handled instead by High Voltage Software), and unfortunately it seems like we’ve got another case of a below-par fighting game on the platform. It’s a shame, because the core game is a very solid, entertaining dose of gruesome violence.
