Descent: Underground just about made its Kickstarter goal last month, exceeding the target of $600,000 by just $1,000 with only a few hours left on the clock.
Cutting it very fine indeed. Still, it looks like developer Descendent Studios is up and running with that base level funding – the newest trailer looks very fine indeed.
Especially compared to the original 1995 version. Though I can’t help but feel ever so slightly melancholy at the brand, spanking new Unreal Engine 4 graphics with their shiny anti-aliasing and dynamic lighting. Some of the blocky charm of the lo-fi original games seems to have been lost in translation.
Of course, that’s an unfair snap judgement. There looks to be some exciting, colourful sci-fi action in the pipeline here, an updated version of that classic ‘six degrees of freedom’ gameplay with all the dog-fighting and key locating you could ask for. Eight ships, four different themed map types, and a weapon and hull upgrade system are all included.
