It was almost inevitable as soon as Capcom revealed that it was developing a remake of its own, but InvaderGames has cancelled its fan-made project Resident Evil 2 Reborn.
The team had been working on Reborn for over a year, but all that hard work hasn’t gone to waste. Though Capcom asked them to remove the mod, this was far from your usual cease and desist order.
“Contrary to what might be thought,” writes the developer, “this is wonderful news for us and, as fans, we’re so happy that Capcom has decided to take the lead of the project and to develop the remake awaited for years by everybody (nobody could bring back to life the masterpiece of 1998 better than the creators themselves). Meanwhile as developers, we’re honoured to announce that we’ve been officially invited to meet Capcom.”
“Capcom called us up in advance of the announcement and asked us if we would mind stopping the project as they had longer term plans for a Resident Evil 2 Remake. They have invited us to a meeting to discuss further ideas.”
Of course, Capcom might not end up working with InvaderGames at all, but it’s still really nice to see a big company treat their modding community with such respect. Considering the impeccable lighting, texture work and sound design we’ve seen from the early alpha of Resident Evil 2 Reborn, InvaderGames’s input could certainly be of value.
