Bethesda and Id Software’s upcoming DOOM reboot won’t feature drop-in co-op in the style of recent games like Far Cry 4, but the developers aren’t ruling out the potential for co-operative play entirely.
The game’s executive producer Marty Stratton confirmed to PC Gamer that there would be no campaign co-op, but revealed that its modding programme, SnapMap, would allow players to craft their own singleplayer maps.
”In a sense,” Stratton said, when asked whether SnapMap could be used to create custom singleplayer missions. “You create a level experience, and then to create a campaign-type thing you would link those (levels) together in, like, a playlist.”
”You wouldn’t necessarily carry weapons from one level to the next. The author could set it up knowing you have this set of weapons as you go into this next component. It’s little bit more like a playlist.”
As for official co-op, it doesn’t sound like we’ll be able to team up for a bout of rocket-powered demon-eviscerating, but Stratton did say the feature is “probably something we’ll think about for future iterations.”
DOOM is coming to PC and consoles next year.
