There aren’t currently any Bioshock games on the horizon, but Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick says that the franchise is still ”really important” to its subsidiary publisher 2K Games.
Zelnick was speaking during the Technology, Media, & Telecom Conference in New York this week, where he also revealed the franchise has sold more than 25 million copies in total. 2013’s Bioshock Infinite accounted for 11 million of those copies.
”It’s a really important intellectual property for the company,” said Zelnick. ”And while I don’t have any announcements to make, yes, it’s a really important franchise for us.”
Series creator Irrational Games closed down last year, so it’ll be 2K Marin that takes the reins for any future productions. The team itself is a spin-off from Irrational, and apart from its work on the Bioshock series, is best known for the slightly disappointing 2013 shooter The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
2K, of course, has been flooding Twitter with teasers for a new project that has a whiff of Bioshock about it. Mock adverts for tech company Advent make plenty of references to “DNA splicing” and ”gene therapy”, which are two prominent concepts in the series. There’s been no confirmation as to what the mysterious project is, however.
