Mojang is shutting down its collectible strategic card game Scrolls, which has been around in playable form since roughly 2012. The studio says that it ”can no longer sustain continuous development”.
”We’ve had a great time working on Scrolls,” the team writes, ”and appreciate every last player who’s downloaded our game. Extra big thanks to the most dedicated members of our community; some of you have logged in almost every day since release and dedicated a large portion of your time to dominating the leaderboards and taking care of new players. We salute you, honourable scrolldiers.”
It’s hard not to think that the impressive success of Blizzard’s Hearthstone stole some of Scrolls’ thunder. The game, which had some interesting idea, and a neat, steampunk art style, never quite managed to build up the same loyal player-base as its fellow genre mates.
Fans will be able to at least enjoy the game for a little longer. Mojang will keep the servers open until next month, at which point any future proceeds will go towards keeping the game running. Echoes, which went live at the start of June, will be the last major update, but Mojang says it will still keep an eye on game balance as the game winds down.
Other than that, it’s pretty much sayonara, which is a shame.
