Ah, cooking. Such an underutilized gaming concept. It’s got it all! Time management, a clear logic for upgrades through better appliances, a gradual difficulty curve from simple dishes to more complex ones… It’s a perfect concept for bite-sized arcade experiences, but there just aren’t many games that put you in the kitchen.
But there’s soon to be one more! Overcooked is baking up its own take on local co-op, challenging one to four players to successfully deliver a variety of meals to demanding patrons. You’ll explore the wacky world of the Onion Kingdom, and serve up deliciousness everywhere from the high seas to deep space.
Local co-op is an increasingly overplayed genre, but there’s something about Overcooked that’s speaking to me. Maybe it’s the over-the-top take on a mundane profession. Maybe I like cooking-based games. Maybe I’m just hungry. In any case, I’m looking forward to the final product.
Overcooked is being developed by a two-man team of former Frontier Developments employees, both of whom had been at the company for well over half-a-decade. Elite: Dangerous to local multiplayer cooking is a big shift, but more and more AAA developers are leaving the big industry to work on passion projects. Hopefully this will be another successful one.
