This year’s game awards and all the following shows will now focus on showcasing actual gameplay of the games they present rather than CGI or pre-rendered footage after the recent backlash with games like No Man’s Sky.
Host of the annual awards show Geoff Keighley talked about the future in a recent interview and stated that he had learned some lessons from No Man’s Sky “I have thought about the story of No Man’s Sky a lot, did we create this black hole of hype that the developers couldn’t pull themselves out of? Some of that was authored by me.”
“There is a good moral of that story and it’s part of what I’m trying to address this year; to have developers be more transparent about the state of their game.” said Keighley. He plans to have games showcased in a more lets play fashion, trying to show the real state of games that are not yet released.
Keighley also said that there is immense pressure on developers to portrait their game in a positive light to keep people interested. He plans to allow developers to have their presentations run “five or six minutes” to allow people to get an accurate picture of what the game is.
The Game Awards will stream live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Dec. 1 and will be streamed live on platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Twitch, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and YouTube. It will also be streamed in VR and for the first time but will not be aired on television.
