The new and improved Unreal Engine 3 will get a public showing during the Game Developers Conference that starts next week.
It sports integrated support for MMOGs and something called ‘Unreal Lightmass’, ”a new global illumination solver”. Their new Swarm framework generates lighting ”10 times faster” too.
Development should be easier with the ‘Unreal Content Browser’, which ”enables designers to find game assets near-instantly among large amounts of source content”, it’s also going to be paraded.
For the online service conscious developer, Epic have the ‘Unreal Master Control Program’ which is ”a high-reliability online service architecture supporting announcements, settings management, online population tracking, and data collection for hardware, profile, and game stats”.
”Furthermore, Epic’s new Swarm distributed computing framework enables lighting to be generated up to 10 times faster,” said Epic, which should compliment ‘Unreal Lightmass’ nicely as it ”produces high-quality static lighting with next-generation effects”.
Could be see a bit of a showdown between Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 and Crytek’s CryENGINE 3? Both will be showcased at this year’s GDC event.
