Larry Laffer is one of the iconic adventure game icons whose star has fallen in recent years, having appeared in bombs like Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust. Larry creator Al Lowe is teaming up with Replay Games founder Paul Trowe to bring back the original Leisure Suit Larry games. The remakes will feature updated HD visuals and a more naturalistic comic style, starting with the original game, Land of the Lounge Lizards Softporn Adventure.">/i
Lowe and Trowe, both Sierra On-Line graphic adventure game alums, seem ecstatic to release Larry from what they call a “corporate prison.” ”I’m overjoyed to see Larry released from his digital dungeon after all this time,” Lowe beamed, ”And be placed in the hands of someone (Trowe) who understands him and wants to see him, brought back to the forefront by people who love him and understand him.”
Trowe revealed that he’d been trying to acquire the rights to the character, whom he fell in love with as a beta tester for Sierra On-Line, admitting: “I’ve been trying to get the Larry rights for 10 years. I grew up in the Sierra family, starting beta-testing at 12 years old. To work with such amazing talent, like Al and Roberta is one of my life-long passions. These guys were way ahead of their time, and to be a part of this magic makes me really happy.”
The original game was released in 1991 and the game will stick faithfully to the plot, but Trowe couldn’t help but imagine how Larry would take to the digital age. “As a software salesman,” Trowe speculated, :I think Larry would feel right at home (in today’s Internet age), and would stay current … at least with pornography… I can see Larry going on Match.com. I’d love to see that series of outtakes.”
Leisure Suit Larry in The Land of the Lounge Lizards will be released on all available platforms, including PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.
