You must be ”sensitive to control differences” though and make sure you’re ”accommodating”, but Valve believes we should get together ”on whatever device”.
”We never want to create these ‘islands of players’,” said Valve co-founder Gabe Newell.
”You have to be sensitive to control differences, and make sure you’re accommodating that, but, you know, our view is players should be able to play as part of a community on whatever device they can.” Currently Valve is developing Counter-Strike: Global offensive which is heading for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2012.
”You know, sometimes there are contractual, or other issues that make that hard, where somebody, a platform holder doesn’t want you to do that for whatever reason, but our preference is always to let customers play and be part of the larger community.”
It’s unlikely Microsoft will be keen to share their install base with Sony anytime soon, however PlayStation Network is far more open to co-operation with third-party networks. Valve has in fact got their own version of Steamworks running on the PlayStation 3.
