The 10 year publishing partnership between Activision and Bungie, which was signed in 2010, calls for four games and four major DLC releases in the next eight years. The first project is an MMO-style game that will have a timed exclusivity for the Xbox 360 and Xbox 720 (codename) in 2013, with the PlayStation 3 version following in the fall of 2014.
The original agreement with Bungie called for the developer to work on four “massively multiplayer-style…sci-fantasy, action shooter games” under the codename “Destiny.” The downloadable content in the form of expansion packs were listed under the codename “Comet,” with the first DLC hitting in 2014.
An intriguing part of the deal revealed that Activision allowed Bungie to devote up to five percent of its staff to work on a reboot or revamp of the developer’s famed Marathon series.
The April 2011 ViDoc by Bungie, “O Brave New World”, first hinted of “Destiny” as an MMOFPS. However, the unsealed documents were current as of the 16th April, 2010, four days after West and Zampella formed Respawn Entertainment and signed on with Electronic Arts. Terms of Bungie and Activision’s agreement might have changed since then.
