Okay, fellow fans of A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s time to start getting excited; Telltale’s Game of Thrones adventure is almost upon us, and the developer has released the first concrete information about the game’s plot and setting.
We’ll be playing as several characters from the noble House Forrester, sworn to the Starks of Winterfell. They reside at the imposing stronghold of Ironrath, and their house words are appropriately badass - “Iron from Ice”.
This signifies their belief that the harsh landscape of the North, one of the locations we’ll be seeing in some detail, lends them their strength. Ironrath itself is surrounded by a forest of Ironwood, a valuable material used to build weapons, ships and buildings.
“House Forrester controls the majority of the ironwood forests in the Wolfswood, much to the chagrin of their bitter rivals, House Whitehill,” explains Telltale. Might the dogs of House Whitehill be one of the enemies we’ll need to deal with, Gregor Clegane-style?
Game of Thrones will have five playable characters, either direct family members of the Forrester name, or vassals or sworn servants of the House. “Playing as five characters not only reflects the epic scope of Game of Thrones, but is also something that the player needs to be mindful of,” claims Telltale. “This is because the actions of one character can ripple out to affect the rest of House Forrester. Multiply the actions of one character by five, and you’re truly playing the Game of Thrones…where you win, or you die.”
I’m approaching peak excitement. In a Winter season packed full of tantalising big-name games, Game of Thrones is one of my most anticipated titles. Episode One will drop “soon” for PC and consoles, and Telltale promises more detailed information shortly.
