Any self-respecting open world game needs a good setting, and Avalanche’s latest developer diary video suggests that Just Cause 3 has one in the ”400 square mile” Mediterranean island of Medici.
It’s actually hero Rico’s place of birth, but under the control of evil bad guy General Di Ravello it’s a bit less welcoming than he remembers. On the plus side, it’s great for messing about with a grappling hook.
”We wanted to create an environment that’s very vertical, that allowed for navigation in a way that got Rico quickly into the air,” explains one of the development team. ”So we thought about what places in the world has cliffs that are a hundred metres tall, what places in the world have crystal clear waters?”
There are three main regions in the game. Region one is mainly comprised of both rich and poor coastal towns, surrounded by agricultural zones. Region two is where the military bases of the General are located, alongside fishing towns and hidden rebel bases. Region three is described as the ”Game of Thrones” region, with mountains, forests and a big wall that divides the country.
It’s an intriguing look into the thought processes that go into world creation for a video game like this. Can’t wait to unleash some chaos on Medici when Just Cause 3 launches this December 1.
