Sea of Thieves, from beleaguered but legendary UK studio Rare, is due out early 2018 but we still don't know too much about why we should truly care, especially in a world where Early Access title Blackwake and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag spin-off Skull & Bones already exist. To combat this Rare have released a new video detailing the Top 10 Things You Need To Know About Sea of Thieves. It's embedded below.
You can watch the video for more detail, but the Top 10 boils down to:
It should be pointed out that with the last one, you can sign up for Insider Access to the Sea of Thieves alpha right here, however it only seems to be on Xbox right now. Some of these are more suspicious than others, like the community being incredibly welcoming - it's not out yet! - and the fact that it's from Rare doesn't mean much when the last good Rare game was Viva Pinata in 2006. We love the cross-play between PC and consoles though, something Microsoft seems in support of whereas Sony is trying to restrict at every point (see the Minecraft affair). And having a more whimsical online pirate game rather than the dour Skull & Bones is probably a good thing.
Sea of Thieves certainly looks interesting, but it all comes down to the amount of things to do in the world combined with how many players are willing to play it. Blackwake has been making waves (heh) in Early Access for a while and looks very similar, and Ubisoft's Skull & Bones has the excellence of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (the pirate one) to build off of - plus, it's out this year. Sea of Thieves isn't out until "Early 2018". Still, with Microsoft and Rare behind it hopefully it'll do fine - provided it isn't randomly cancelled or something.
