Ebert has retracted his cynical view saying he was ”a fool” to make such an assumption, after all he’d ”never express an opinion” on an unseen movie.
His post, debunking videogames as having any chance of being considered art, draw the attention of over 4,500 comments. Even pro-wrestler Samoa Joe couldn’t contain his twittering love for videogames saying Ebert ”could never be more wrong”.
”Too be honest Uncharted 2 was the best action flick I saw all last year!” quipped the muscled wrestling man, reports Kotaku. Anyway back to Ebert’s apology…
”My error in the first place was to think I could make a convincing argument on purely theoretical grounds,” said the critic, now full of critical remorse.
”What I was saying is that video games could not in principle be Art. That was a foolish position to take, particularly as it seemed to apply to the entire unseen future of games. This was pointed out to me maybe hundreds of times.”
”How could I disagree? It is quite possible a game could someday be great Art.” However the movie man still believes that games will stop short of being works of art. ”But I should never have said so,” he adds. ”Some opinions are best kept to yourself.”
Hilarious isn’t it? Theatre was just as scornful, as were its critics, of this crazy moving pictures ‘business’ that sprung up out of nowhere. Now theatre is all but dead compared to its glory days with cinema having near killed it as the successor ‘art’.
Even Hollywood talent agencies have recognised the power in the videogames industry as they start to sign major game designers. I suppose cinema has been around long enough that it deserves to lament its downfall to videogames as the next, better art form?
