The report predicts that 14m PS3s will sell to 10.5m Xbox 360s this year, and Mercer adds that Wii lifetime sales will hit 103m before its end.
…and that end is sometime in 2011, because that’s when numbers will really start to fall for Nintendo’s magical motion platform. Xbox 360 and PS3 won’t end as quickly as 2012-14 is the time period each will peak in number according to Mercer’s report.
”Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences,” said the analyst, reports VideoGamer.com. The report is entitled ‘Taming the Waves: Games Console Life Cycles and Platform Competition’, and says PS3 FTW!
”But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014.”
PlayStation 2 has enjoyed a huge lifecycle compared to other consoles and continues to sell even today with impressive numbers, which is Sony’s hope for this gen’s PS3. On that point - yes, the PlayStation 3 will ‘win’ this generation of consoles.
Do you still have a PS2 kicking around, videogamer? Maybe even a PSOne?
