That’s a different thing altogether, as it’s a ”more realistic fit”. Toriyama-san admits FFXIII doesn’t have ”basic RPG” like ”towns or shops.”
”The basic RPG functions are to go into towns, prepare for battle by going to shops, then go out in the field,” Toriyama-san explained, reports Kotaku.
”In that sense, Final Fantasy XIII doesn’t have towns or shops—it’s more that players are thrown into a story, presented with different situations as they move forward in the field and keep progressing that way.”
This is where Call of Duty’s influence played a part in keeping FFXIII’s action always flowing. ”In that sense it’s more similar to an FPS genre, like Call of Duty,” he said.
”That’s not to say it’s an action shooting game at all, so Final Fantasy XIII takes some different aspects of different genres, transcending different types of games.”
JRPG fans needn’t fear a genre change. ”Final Fantasy as a series will probably never” adopt ”a first person shooter style. The concepts the teams are always working with have the character always on screen and visually trying to make battles look exciting.”
”With the Final Fantasy series, there has always been dialogue, players relating to the characters in a sense that they see characters on screen,” chipped in producer Yoshinori Kitase, who recently killed hopes for any FFXIII DLC.
”We really want the characters to have a personality,” he added. I’m not sure Infinity Ward would like the insinuation of no personality surrounding their Call of Duty cast.
”Maybe a third person shooter style would be a more realistic fit with the Final Fantasy series,” added Toriyama-san. Do you enjoy a good RPG with towns and shops to buy your wares, videogamer? Maybe you prefer sticking to the action more?
