Peter Dille says the PS3 is ”more than just” a console, and it’s ”redefining” digital content delivery to the home. This is MLBs first platform deal.
Users will be able to sign up with MLB.TV to stream through their PlayStation 3 by the end of the week reveals the New York Times, reports VG247.
”This is more than just a game console. This is a device that is redefining how content is being delivered to the living room,” said Sony boss Peter Dille. PSN users will have access to the existing MLB.TV package, offering hundreds of baseball games to watch.
There will be an annual fee though specifics aren’t clear how the profits are split between MLB and Sony. 2009 ended with around 500,000 PC subscribers to MLB.TV. ”It continues our path of making sure that our content is available to the fans,” said Robert A. Bowman, MLB Advanced Media’s chief executive.
12 million PlayStation 3s are installed in the US with approximately 9 million already connected to the Internet. Bowman regarded deals like these through consoles as supplementary and not the start of the end for cable and satellite viewing.
