It showed they had a ”deep understanding” of the Fallout universe, and knowledge of ”key aspects”. Cain would have ”done things differently”.
”I played and finished Fallout 3 as soon as it came out. I really enjoyed the game, and I think Bethesda’s designers had really done their homework,” Cain told DAC.
”The game showed they had a deep understanding and knowledge of the key aspects of the original games. I even replayed it a few times to see how I could have different experiences, and I had fun with that.”
”Of course, I would have done things differently if I had made it,” he added.
Cain left Interplay and founded Troika Games, who went on to make ‘Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines’, and had hoped they’d land the rights to Fallout.
”I was hoping that Troika would get the license, but we were massively outbid. But in the end, they made a good game,” said Cain, who now works as design director at Carbine Studios, developing an unannounced NCsoft MMORPG.
Do you think Bethesda pulled off a great Fallout 3? Obsidian Entertainment, who are made up of ex-Black Isle staffers, is making Fallout: New Vegas for launch this fall.
