Electronic Arts COO John Schappert states, ”My personal view is the larger idea, at least for the present, would be the connected game. I’m more in the camp that IPTV is a bigger idea for gaming, at least in the near term, than 3D is. It just provides a better social experience and you know that consumers playing with one another is a very positive and powerful motivator.”
”While there’s no doubt that our industry will have its Avatar,” Shappert added, “Where 3D is a defining aspect of the game … I’m mostly interested, with all the mobile devices that are coming out, in how they’re being connected to one another and how the same IP is shared over the top.”
However, there is the possibility that Avatar was the exception and not the rule, as 3D movies have come and gone on a 30 year cycle (the 1950’s, the 1980’s and now the 2010’s), and the only difference between this period and that period was the technological capability to have stereoscopic 3D televisions - but it may be that 3D is relegated to just being an event rather than the norm.
In other words, it’s something you don’t mind for three hours in 365 days, not 365 days a year.
