Sony confirms new firmware to 'fix' PSN

Sony is once again trying to reassure customers about their credit card data (one has to assume hackers having full access to personal data isn’t as troubling anymore.) The company says on the official blog that ”(the credit card) data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network.The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken.”

They then state, ”While all credit card information stored in our systems is encrypted and there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility,” which seems to contradict their first statement.

Regardless, a new firmware update is coming ”that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway.”

PlayStation 3 users are used to frequent firmware updates, of course. Hopefully, this one will allow them to enjoy their online gaming - like the just-released Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat - in less than a week.
