Stardock's Star Control reboot will take place in a new continuity, make heavy use of community created content

Stardock CEO Brad Wardell has penned a blog post that reveals a few details about the studio’s in-development Star Control game, a prequel to the classic action/strategy title.

Well, technically it’s a prequel in that it takes place before the events of the first game, but Wardell reveals that the games actually takes place in a new continuity; it’s “a reboot with a new story and new aliens” that doesn’t impact on the so-called ‘Ur-Quan’ continuity of the original games.

“In the base game, player will start 2112 with the first human contact with an alien race,” Wardell explains. “From there, the humans will launch their first interstellar ship and begin exploring this area of the galaxy. The ship will be highly customizeable (both visually and in terms of equipment).  Thus, by the end of the base game, the player’s ship will have evolved into something truly unique while at the same time gathering a fleet of alien allies to fight the primary antagonist and their allies.”

After you’ve dominated the one star cluster, you’ll actually be able to head off into the deeper galaxy like Captain Kirk himself. These extra clusters will be created by the game’s community using mod tools known as the Precursor workshop, allowing a great amount of extra exploration outside the main campaign.

It’ll be a while before the new Star Control is ready – Wardell hints that the 25th anniversary of Star Control 2 is 2017 – but there will be an open beta sometime before then.

As for the original series, Wardell writes that he and Stardock “hope to work with Paul and Fred (Paul Reiche and Fred Ford from the original game’s developer Toys for Bob) in the future to ensure the rich universe they created continues to be supported.”
