Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand Gameplay Impressions
Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand puts a roguelite spin on the series’ established formula, and its streamlined, randomized approach to real-time strategy works surprisingly well.
Its goal is offering bite-sized servings that accommodate a wide range of players, from complete newbies who haven’t touched the series to hardcore veterans who know all about micromanagement, positioning, and unit counters. Final Stand aims to achieve this through no less than eight available difficulty settings.
During each match, you’re tasked with defending an allied headquarters against 12 increasingly difficult enemy waves. There’s no economy to worry about thanks to a steady passive stream of resources, so all you have to focus on is producing units from the barracks and giving them the right orders.
You build your unit and ability roster by selecting one of several choices at set points during each match, which is where the roguelite element comes in. Sometimes, powerful synergies will come easily, while on other occasions you’ll have to make do with a scrappier force.
The units and abilities available in Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand should be familiar to CoH3 veterans, but the standalone mode is prone to allow you to break the rules. One ability significantly increases the fire rate of vehicles when below 90% health. Pair that with multiple King Tigers, and you’ll feel more powerful than the base game ever allowed.
While most unit abilities cost munitions – requiring you to carefully decide when to use them – the general ones – which range from damage bonuses to passively healing structures or bonuses that make engineers just as efficient when performing repairs in combat – are either automatically applied once unlocked or come with lengthy cooldowns attached.
A targeted airstrike could save a veteran unit that’s about to die, but may then be unavailable for the next wave, which spawns a powerful boss enemy. These challenging foes appear at specific points during matches, boasting larger health pools and generally increased lethality.
A scout car with thrice the health becomes a much more notable threat, especially if you lack armor. A Wermacht unit spamming grenades requires much more attention to where your troops are positioned and likely several squads working together to swiftly dispatch it before it wreaks havoc on your defenses.
Special events like incendiary bombing runs, artillery strikes, enemies setting up propaganda towers that hamper your troops, or artillery positions that bombard your headquarters from afar add further variables to matches.
The five maps available generally stick to a three-lane format, with one exception that tasks you with defending five. On standard difficulty, the early waves are quite manageable, but towards the end, I did begin sweating a bit, as the enemy’s veteran troops began cutting through mine.
While the randomized unit and ability choices keep Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand’s matches fresh, unlockable, upgradeable perks make up its long-term progression. Perk points are earned based on your performance in matches, which award medals based on how many waves you defeat. These points can only be used on the faction you spend them as, increasing its efficiency in battle and allowing you to tackle higher difficulties.
My brief time with the mode convinced me that there’s enough here to warrant returning for short sessions of more focused real-time strategy mayhem, and I’m looking forward to try it in co-op, where the threats are doubled, but your teammate adds to the synergistic potential.
Although I’m not sure Final Stand will become a long-term mainstay that replaces skirmish and multiplayer for longtime fans of the series, it does an excellent job of putting a roguelite spin on the base game’s formula, complementing the third entry in the series quite well.
