After an initial reveal in late 2025 and exciting comments from the developer, the calm colony sim Luminids, which is all about round little creatures with complex behaviours and a wide range of emotions, has launched a playtest on Steam.
The game is planned to launch into early access at some point next year, but curious players can now sign up for and download the playtest build. Developer Nicholas Jacob has also encouraged those who jump in to try different things with the Luminids, build a surprising colony, and even try to break stuff. The game continues to evolve, but more pressure from external testing is needed to iron things out.
If you’re coming in fresh and don’t know what Luminids actually is, the developer describes it as “a cozy colony-building sandbox where you shape the land and guide a growing colony of little creatures with personalities and needs of their own.” While you also can reshape the environment and help them thrive, Luminids are meant to be expressive and have lives of their own. You can influence them, but the beauty of the game is watching them learn and grow at their own pace.
Luminids mixes a view from above with first-person exploration, allowing players to both plan the colony’s expansion and meet their little friends up close. There’s plenty to do, but this is a game that’s meant to be “thoughtful and relaxing” first and foremost. No need to rush things!
Whether you go for a more hands-on approach or let the Luminids fully shape their world, this ambitious sim game attempts to put a new spin on well-established ideas and genre conventions. It’s also built for both solo and co-op, with more details to arrive as its early access launch approaches.
For now, you can enjoy the ongoing playtest and keep an eye on the upcoming Kickstarter campaign if you want to support Luminids’ development.
