NPD figures have revealed a gloomy statistic, US consumer spending on videogames in May fell below $1 billion, which it hasn’t done since August ‘07.
From last year’s $1.12bn, this year saw $863.3m. Hardware shrunk 30 percent, software fell 17 percent while peripherals are down 5 percent. 2009 is ‘struggling’ to compare with ‘08.
”The video games industry continues to struggle with difficult comparisons to last year, and this is the first month that industry sales have dipped below $1 billion since August 2007,” said Anita Frazier, an NPD analyst.
”May is typically one of the lowest revenue-generating months in any given year for the industry in general.” We just did too well for our own good last year, and the month of May sucks. End transmission.
