According to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox 360 has now shifted over 28 million units globally. While this still puts it way behind the Wii, it does give Microsoft a lead of 8 million over the PlayStation 3.
Microsoft claim that their lead over Sony not only stretches to 7 million units in the US, but even the traditionally Sony faithful European territories have 1 million more Xbox 360s in their homes.
The figures come from recently announced NPD results for December, which also put total lifetime spending on Xbox 360 at $13.2 billion. That’s more than twice PlayStation 3’s figure, which weighs in at a comparatively modest $6.1 billion.
Xbox LIVE memberships have also increased to 17 million, generating even more revenue in membership fees.
Overall, gamers spent a staggering $5 billion (£3.37 million) during the month of December, accumulating the highest revenue for the industry in videogame history.
