The update isn’t mandatory, unless you want to log into the PlayStation Network ever again, or play games or movies that need later firmware.
The latest firmware 3.21 is proving controversial among certain circles, with Sony citing ”security concerns” as the reason for pulling ‘Other OS’ functionality. Not long ago notorious hacker Geohot, behind the iPhone jailbreak, reported he had cracked the PS3.
That same coding enthusiast claims he’ll find a ”safe way” to keep Other OS support on the PlayStation 3, allowing users to keep systems like Linux running post 3.21. Sony blames the feature as causing hackers to work out the PlayStation 3 systems.
It’s clearly a pre-emptive measure by Sony to combat piracy it now fears will come.
