The studio affirms their ”not doing multiplayer” because it ”just didn’t feel right.” Online play would have been a ”half-assed job” so they skipped it.
“We’re not doing multiplayer… but downloadable content is something we’re definitely looking at,” Mafia II senior producer Denby Grace told VG247. The first game was a surprise hit, no pun intended, and secured its place as a top mob contender.
It favours storyline over an open-world environment, despite it featuring some of the most fantastic designs and gameplay mechanics. You could get in trouble for speeding and running red lights… not good when you’ve got ‘special merchandise’ in the trunk.
”All games seem to have it nowadays. We’re not ready to talk about it right now, but I definitely won’t close the door on downloadable content,” he said. “Mafia is all about this single-player, cinematic experience, like watching a movie.”
“Multiplayer just didn’t feel right. At 2K, at a higher level, we certainly believe that if we’re going to do something we’re going to do it properly. We don’t want to do a half-assed job on something.” The game has been heavily delayed during its development.
“If you can’t compete with Call of Duty and those sorts of games, then why even go there?” Mafia II is currently scheduled for Take-Two’s fourth fiscal quarter this year, which is between July 31st and October 31st. It releases for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
