It seems like PlayStation Network may be down not because people’s credit card information are in danger, but because hackers are running a credit card scam that allows PSN to authorize fake credit card purchases.
A poster on Reddit.com called chesh420 has claimed that PSN went down shortly after new mod hit the web called Rebug.me. The fake firmware software allows users to access a developer network where they can enter a fake credit card number and download content for free.
Rebug.me was released in March. ”Now, you can believe Sony’s PR team which has kept you completely in the dark, or you can see the list of events above and come to your own conclusion,” chesh420 wrote.
Sony’s PR team has stated that the outage was due to “external intrusion” and that it was rebuilding the network with additional security.
