Last September, Atlus delayed shutting down Demon’s Souls servers. Now, the publisher will be closing them down and this time it’ll be permanent.
The servers for the PlayStation 3 action title will be closing down on the 31st May a minute before midnight PDT. However, before the servers go down, Atlus will be running two World Tendency events, running on May 1-15 and May 16-31. The events will be based on a fan vote.
Atlus vice president of sales and marketing Tim Pivnicny thanked fans for supporting the game, stating, ”Regrettably, the online servers cannot be sustained forever and now the end draws near. Thank you to the unparalleled passion and support of the Demon’s Souls community throughout these last two and a half years,” he said. “The online adventure may end soon, but the memory of it–just like that of every boss strategy, every level floor plan, and hidden secret–lives on in the gamers for whom the game was so special.”
Fortunately, Dark Souls has proven to be a more than capable spiritual successor, landing on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.
