Madden NFL 25 sells 1M units in first week

Electronic Arts has announced that Madden NFL 25, which is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the long-running sports series, has sold 1M units across two platforms in the past week. The game is down from the 1.65M sales in week 1 by Madden NFL 13.

However, with the next-gen versions for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 looming, it could be users are holding off the current-gen version despite GameStop offering a $10 upgrade from current to next gen.

However, Madden NFL 25 enjoyed the best revenue in the series history thanks to the microtransaction-driven Madden Ultimate Team card-collecting minigame. According to EA, fans opened 3.3 million virtual packs of Madden Ultimate Team cards in the first week, which is an improvement from the 2.6M packs.

Madden NFL 25 Anniversary Edition also sold well. It is a $100 Amazon.com exclusive that added the NFL Sunday Ticket cable package (which normally sells $300 for DirectTV subscribers.) It was the Amazon's best-selling sports game preorder in the online retailer's history.
