Screen Australia, the agency of the Australian federal government dedicated to supporting film, television and video game production, is pledging A$6M over the next 3 years to 10 indie videogame studios.
The agency has stated that Australia has lost developers to regions with lower costs and greater incentives. In fact, in 2012, only 581 studio personnel were working in Australia, down from 1431 in 2011.
The ten studios getting development, along with their current projects, include:
* Defiant Development (Ski Safari)
-
ODD Games (Monster Truck Destruction)
-
Soap Creative (Diggin’ Dogs)
-
Tantalus Media (Funky Barn)
-
Tin Man Games (Gamebook Adventures)
-
Torus Games (The Croods: Prehistoric Party)
-
Twiitch (Coco Loco)
-
Uppercut Games (SnowJinks)
-
The Voxel Agents (Puzzle Retreat)
-
Wicked Witch Software (Catapult King)
According to Screen Australia COO Fiona Cameron, the funds will allow smaller companies to increase their workforce, and let larger companies switch from doing contract work to developing original IP.
