Blizzard recently put up an interesting job listing on their site. Their California office is looking for a Senior Software Engineer specifically in charge of curating and leading projects regarding their extensive classic repertoire.
The requirements and qualifications are quite hefty, but the purpose of the position is quite noble. There’s definitely a lot of folks who favor finding ways to bring the old favorites to a new generation. The Senior Software Engineer will be charge of a myriad of tasks that seem dedicated to bringing those old games into the current era.
Some of the official job responsibilities include the following according to the listing:
“-Make gameplay first again on modern operating systems.
-Own implementation and curation of features new and old.
-Combat hacking to improve multiplayer.
-Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.”
There have often been workarounds for getting games like Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness and StarCraft to play for awhile, but it’s interesting to see that Blizzard might take an official role in not only bringing gems to a new generation, but also support the games and ensure perfect playability even on today’s machines. Good luck to anyone who finds their way to the position.
