A new unit is making its way to Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void in the latest Beta Patch 5.2, the Liberator airship. This is a high-cost flying fortress that packs an area affect punch against other air units, but can also target a point on the surface to damage ground units.
”We want this unit to make the Starport more rounded along with the other changes we’re bringing into Legacy of the Void, like the banshee movement speed upgrade and the Battlecruiser Tactical Jump ability,” explains Blizzard. ”By introducing this unit to the Starport and separating out the Terran mech vehicle and ship upgrades, we think it’ll allow for a more diverse set of strategies for the Terran.”
The idea is to encourage players to try new unit combinations, since they’ll find it hard to mix together the tech routes for the Barracks, Factory and Starport (the three production facilities for infantry, armour and air units respectively). Other unit changes include separation of vehicle and ship weapon upgrades, while missile turrets need an Engineering Bay in order to be constructed.
Other fixes in Patch 5.2 include a new chat system, a more responsive friends list, and a bunch of unit tweaks and bug fixes for all factions. You can find the full list of notes here.
Legacy of the Void’s multiplayer beta started last month, and will run on for an as yet unspecified period. Blizzard says ”we have not determined an exact end date for the beta test. We will notify participants when the beta test is nearing completion.”
