System Shock, which younger gamers may remember as the game that BioShock was a successor to, has been coming back in a big way. First, news that System Shock 3 was in development. Then a Kickstarter for a System Shock remake. And now that remake is fully funded.
The Kickstarter launched on June 28, and reached its funding goal of $900,000 over the past weekend. With 17 days to go, the campaign has plenty of time to push for stretch goals, which include Mac and Linux versions, localization for additional markets, extra locations, more gameplay features, and a full orchestral score.
Gaming Kickstarter have had a bit of a rough patch with some recent high-profile failures, but with a team featuring industry veterans like Warren Spector, Paul Neurath, and Brian Fargo, this game has a pedigree that suggests success. The System Shock remake is expected to release late in 2017, and a pre-alpha demo is available through Steam, GOG.com, and the Humble Store.
