Valve had confirmed that popular MOBA Dota 2 would not be getting its Halloween-themed event this year. After a user on Reddit posted a question to see if the Diretide event would be coming this year, Valve developer username DanielJ_Valve confirmed there will not be a return of Diretide.
Taking to the thread to simply post “There’s no Diretide, sorry guys.” Valve seemingly gave no explanation as to why the event wouldn’t be coming this year. The news shocked some users who couldn’t understand why Valve wouldn’t want to run the themed event especially when it makes cosmetic sales for the company.
Valve then took to their site to blog and explain the reasons behind why there will be no Diretide this year. Valve admitted that they were wrong to not communicate effectively. Valve went on to say that they are working on a major update that was originally to ship soon and that was one of the reasons for the lack of the event. They also admitted that they “underestimated how much you wanted Diretide.”
The good news is that Diretide is now coming! Valve stated “First, we’re going to ship Diretide with the next update. The rest of the update we’ve been working on is in final testing, and as each of us finish up our work on it, we’ve been jumping over to Diretide. Second, we’re pretty sure the update that we’ve been working on for a couple of months is going to be pretty significant. In addition, we’ve made a few changes to Diretide that we think makes it more fun than before.
