Could we see Saw back on PC and consoles? It seems there’s a chance.
Rights holder Lionsgate sees increased interest and opportunities to make games based on its properties, and on an earnings call, there was a suggestion that the Saw series was a fine candidate.
The Saw films revolve around John Kramer, aka the Jigsaw Killer, and his violent quest to set bad people in gnarly traps in the hope of getting them to see the error of their ways. Most don’t survive, though, leading to some rather unpleasant death scenes that became a signature of the lucrative horror series. It’s soon to get an eleventh film, which, even by horror franchise standards, is a lot of sequels.
Lionsgate Saw the Signs Before
Of course, there have been Saw games in the past. Konami published a game version by Zombie Studios in 2009, which was set between the first and second films. It had new traps and story elements from series creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
The game itself was an underwhelming mess, and a 2010 sequel, Saw II: Flesh & Blood, was also poorly regarded. By then, the movie series had reached a saturation point with seven films in seven consecutive years. So the poor reception to the games meant there was an understandable hiatus. That was slightly broken up by having characters David Tapp and Amanda Young serve as Survivor and Killer, respectively, in Dead by Daylight.
But after two clunky attempts to refire the film series, 2023’s Saw X revitalized interest in the goretastic saga. With creator James Wan once again involved on the film side, plus new stakeholder Blumhouse having its own horror gaming division, the time is absolutely right to try another Saw game.
Back in 2024, there were rumors of a AAA multiplatform Saw game that would supposedly be revealed that year ahead of a 2025 release. That could still be on the way eventually, as the Saw XI movie has faced several delays itself. So it could be that Lionsgate wanted it kept under wraps until we get closer to the new film’s release.
