Juggernaut game publishers Riot Games (League of Legends) and Ubisoft (Rainbow Six Siege) are uniting in a research project that seeks to help solve the murky world of online abuse within in-game chat.
The project, dubbed Zero Harm in Comms, would hopefully improve the companies existing artificial intelligence used to combat disruptive players, and potentially create a better system for other companies as well. Both studios are already signed up to the Fair Play Alliance, but clearly want to do more for players and their enjoyment and safety in online spaces.
The publisher’s portfolio of studios and genre types should mean they have a wide range of multiplayer experiences to test this project out on.
It was stated that this is still at an early stage, and just the first step in an ambitious cross-industry project that aims to benefit the entire player community in the future.
Yves Jacquier, Executive Director, Ubisoft La Forge said: “Disruptive player behaviors is an issue that we take very seriously but also one that is very difficult to solve. At Ubisoft, we have been working on concrete measures to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences, but we believe that, by coming together as an industry, we will be able to tackle this issue more effectively”.
With some notably toxic players in their respective fanbases, Riot and Ubisoft could well use their prominence to benefit the entire gaming community. We can’t imagine how, from a business point of view, either company would see a long-term gain in keeping disruptive players unchecked.
