Speedball’s journey through early access continues with today’s launch of its League Mode update, which introduces a brand new game mode and two new arenas to Rebellion’s revival of the iconic Bitmap Brothers franchise.
Speedball’s League mode pits us against nine other teams vying for the top spot, tasking us with managing a squad of 18 players across an entire season. Deciding who actively plays, stands by on the bench, or rests each match is key to keeping our team in good shape while avoiding fatigue and preventing injuries.

Unique stats—like shot power, speed, and durability—alongside traits such as pyromaniac, rioter, star shooter, and pitcher add further depth to the process of selecting our team’s composition for each match.
Speedball doesn’t shed violence in its League mode update, resulting in inevitable losses among our ranks. This is when drafting new players becomes key to our team’s championship win, allowing us to scout out and secure replacements for fallen teammates.
In addition to its brand new mode, two new arenas named Grand Central and King’s Terminus are also on the way.
Speedball’s League mode update is one of several planned stops on the title’s early access roadmap. Since its October 2024 launch, developer Rebellion has introduced eight new arenas, improvements to AI, the shooting system, and dynamic arena traps and obstacles.
To anyone unaware, the game is set in a dystopian future where mega-corporations use the titular sport “to distract the downtrodden masses from their miserable lives” by watching “two cybernetically augmented teams to go head-to-head at levels of speed and violence beyond human limitations.”
If you’ve wrapped up Atomfall or want to take a break from exploring its post-apocalyptic take on Britain, Speedball’s League mode update might be a palate-cleanser worth considering.
